SMF "last post" edit?

hey guys.
well this is more of an smf thing than a template thing, but i figured the two would be joined.
so what it is i want to do is edit what it says on the last post on the forum index
currently it says something like this:
Last post by Sudds
in Re: Custom Profiles for ...

the problem with this is it changes the lenth of my board. so i end up with a load of white space on my site. which is ugly, especially when the various boards are differnt sizes
i would like to probably take out the date and time, as the lit up ball will show that it is a new post, since the last time you viewed.
