How to fix my RT site after loading SMF ?

I started re-developing my site on a clean Joomla 1.0.10 with Versatility II.
Then (not knowing about the problems) I installed SMF and the style switching stopped working.
Following the release of Carbonation I decided to swtch to that theme.
The question is - pending the release of a compatible SMF template, what do I need to do *now* to fix the site so that I can carry on development and have it looking like it should ? Can I copy a RT css file back over whatever is now broke ? Do I have to uninstall SMF ?
I suppose the problem is that I don't understand what it is in the SMF installation that has caused the problem.
