How to add image to menu item

I would like to add a "New" image next to a menu item, how to do it.
I tried 'Menu Image' in Parameters settings of the menu but no image shows up. - VirtueShop

Maybe I can explain better with pictures, I have about 50 articles every week I am going to add one and I would like to put a 'New' image in-front or after menu text (see fig. 1)

I am sure this is possible but how, I thought 'menu image' in parameters setting was for this but it doesn't work, am I missing something.

- Got it, I am sure it is not the correct method but at least it works added <img src="images/stories/new5.gif" border="0" /> after menu text.
