3-Column section is too wide (widths and gutters)

Hi All,
I'm running into some confusion about widths and the basic gantry template. When I look at the grid-16.css file I can see rt-grid-1 (60px) + rt-grid-15 (880px) = 940px allowing for the 10+10px gutter in between. Altogether it equals 960px, which is what the basic gantry template specifies.
Where I'm getting confused (and running into an issue) is when you introduce more than two columns to the section. For instance:
rt-grid-2 (120px) + rt-grid-2 (120px) + rt-grid-12 (700px) = 940px, however there's now two gutters involved which add 40px to the width, for a total of 980px.
In my three column section I'm experiencing this problem, and obviously the last column is being pushed down, out of line.
What am I doing wrong, or misunderstanding? Any help will be appreciated!
