Creating archive-[custom post type slug].php

I have a custom post type called "Staff". I want to be able to edit the template file. I copied archive.php from \wp-content\themes\rt_metropolis_wp\html to my child theme folder. I changed the name to archive-staff.php. I get this error.
Parse error: syntax error, unexpected '$paged' (T_VARIABLE) in C:\xampp\htdocs\vetdentistrynm\wp-content\themes\vdos\archive.php on line 22
What am I doing wrong? Here is what I've tried. (All of the actions below resulted in no change. I did all of this with archive.php rather than archive-staff.php.)
- Placed archive.php in a folder called "html" within my child theme.
- Placed archive.php within \wp-content\themes\rt_metropolis_wp\custom
- Placed archive.php within \wp-content\themes\rt_metropolis_wp\custom\html
Any help or links to documentation would be really appreciated. I have Googled this to death and can't find anything.

Hi Graham this will not work! Only thing that is supported in child theme in G4 is the styles.css file.
Placed archive-staff.php within \wp-content\themes\rt_metropolis_wp\ and try then! - Last Edit: 7 years 5 days ago by Damir.
