Creating archive-[custom post type slug].php

  • Creating archive-[custom post type slug].php

    • I have a custom post type called "Staff". I want to be able to edit the template file. I copied archive.php from \wp-content\themes\rt_metropolis_wp\html to my child theme folder. I changed the name to archive-staff.php. I get this error.
Parse error: syntax error, unexpected '$paged' (T_VARIABLE) in C:\xampp\htdocs\vetdentistrynm\wp-content\themes\vdos\archive.php on line 22

What am I doing wrong? Here is what I've tried. (All of the actions below resulted in no change. I did all of this with archive.php rather than archive-staff.php.)
      • Placed archive.php in a folder called "html" within my child theme.
      • Placed archive.php within \wp-content\themes\rt_metropolis_wp\custom
      • Placed archive.php within \wp-content\themes\rt_metropolis_wp\custom\html

Any help or links to documentation would be really appreciated. I have Googled this to death and can't find anything.

      Thanks
