How to remove duplicate menus from top

I am very green,
I am adding menu items to the main menu which is on the left. It also addes them to the top menu.
How do I remove them from the top and make the top have a different set of menu items.

In your index.php
$horizontal_menu = "mainmenu"; // mainmenu by default, can be any Joomla menu name
just change the "mainmenu" to other menu, for example "topmenu"
