Refraction continues the latest trend of SEO optimised templates. The layout of the template has been constructed differently to the norm. A typical WordPress template, in regards to the mainbody source, will load the left column first, then the right column and finally the main column (where your main articles are loaded). Refraction takes a different approach and loads the main column code before the left and right columns. Therefore, this template loads in this order: Header, Menu, Showcase, Main Column, Left Column, Right Column, Bottom, Footer. This is perfect for SEO purposes as the search crawlers will find your main content before your subsidiary content in your side columns. This is a major step forward and will improve your search engine results for your pages.

Installation


Downloading the Theme Files

To install the theme, you only need one file:-

  • Refraction Theme (rt_refraction_wp.zip) – This file is the theme package you will use to install your theme into WordPress.

There are other files that you may wish to download that accompany the release, but are not required for the theme to work.

  • Refraction Sample Content (rt_refraction_wp-sample-(version).zip) – This file contains XML file with sample posts, comments etc. and the "wp-content" directory with all images used in our sample content.
  • Refraction Source PNG(s) (rt_refraction_wp-sources-(version).zip) – This contains all the Adobe Fireworks PNG source files for the theme, and if applicable, the logo font.

Using the WordPress installer

  • Login into the WordPress administrator dashboard (http://www.yoursite.com/wp-admin/)
  • In the left menu sidebar, go to Appearance → Add New Themes → Upload
  • Select the Choose File button
  • Locate the rt_refraction_wp.zip file on your computer
  • Click Install Now
  • On the post-install page (with the theme name, description and thumbnail), select Activate
  • Refraction will now be installed

Using FTP

  • Extract rt_refraction_wp.zip
  • Load your FTP client, such as FileZilla
  • Upload the rt_refraction_wp folder to the http://www.yoursite.com/wp-content/themes
  • Login into the WordPress administrator dashboard (http://www.yoursite.com/wp-admin/)
  • In the left menu sidebar, go to Appearance → Themes
  • Click Activate underneath the Refraction section

Importing Sample Content

This allows you to copy over the data from the Demo so that you can match our setup
  • Extract rt_refraction_wp-sample-(version).zip
  • Enter the wp-content folder from inside of the sample package
  • Upload from it "rockettheme" folder using your favorite FTP client to your WordPress wp-content directory.
  • Locate sample_data.xml
  • Login into the WordPress administrator dashboard (http://www.yoursite.com/wp-admin/)
  • In the left menu sidebar, go to Tools → Import
  • Select WordPress from the numerous options
  • Click Choose File and select sample_data.xml from your computer
  • Click Upload File and Import
  • Now you can create a new author for sample posts or map it to existing user.
  • Press the Submit button and let the Wordpress do the rest.

Where can i find theme settings?
  • Login into the WordPress administrator at http://www.yoursite.com/wp-admin/
  • Select the Appearance tab on the left of the dashboard
  • Select Refraction Settings from within the tab
How to add thumbnails to posts ?
Using Catch First Image – this option searches post content for images, and takes the first one and displays it on the frontpage.
  • Login into the WordPress administrator at http://www.yoursite.com/wp-admin/
  • Select the Appearance tab on the left of the dashboard
  • Select Refraction Settings from within the tab
  • Enable Catch First Image
Please note that if there’s a ‘thumb’ custom field declared in the post, it will be displayed instead, even if the Catch First Image option is active.
Using ‘thumb’ custom field.
  • Enter into edit mode of post next to which you’d like to display your thumbnail
  • In the section "Custom Fields" from the dropdown menu please choose "thumb" – if it doesn’t exist you have to press “Enter new” to create it
  • In the field "Value" next to "thumb" please enter URL to your thumbnail ie. http://www.yoursite.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/thumb.jpg
To check path to an image please go to the Media page in your administration dashboard, click Edit under the image you wish to use, and copy the path from the File URL field.
How to add posts to "Feature" section ?
Posts displayed in the Feature section are located in “Feature” category. There are three things from every post that are displayed in that section – title, content, excerpt (not necessary). Excerpts are used if you’d like to display outstanding text in the middle of the feature box.
How to remove "Feature" section ?
Just go to the Refraction Settings page (Sections tab) in the admin dashboard and next to the Feature Category → choose None

Alternatively WordPress checks if there are posts inside of a category responsible for a specified section, and if it finds any article it displays that section. If you would like to remove a section, just unassign all posts from the category responsible for that section. If WordPress cannot find any articles, it will just hide it.
How to change "Feature" section category ?
If you haven’t installed our sample content you can easily enable “Feature” section by changing its assigned category :-
  • Login into the WordPress administrator at http://www.yoursite.com/wp-admin/
  • In the left menu sidebar, go to Posts → Categories and create a new category for your Feature posts
  • Assign your posts to that category
  • In the left menu sidebar, go to Appearance → Refraction Settings
  • On the top of the settings panel choose tab Sections
  • Select from the dropdown menu your newly created category next to the field Feature Category
How to add posts to the "Footer" section ?
Posts displayed in footer are located in “Footer” category. In the “Refraction Settings” under Sections tab you’ll find more options for Footer section.
