Metropolis December 2012 phpBB Style

Metropolis Metropolis, the December 2012 phpBB club release, is an elegantly designed theme, combining simple color schemes and shades to complement an array of different content setups. An excellent style layer above the responsive core.

The style's content functionality is powered by RokBB 5, which has enhanced support for new community driven RokBridge, a bi-directional bridge for Joomla and phpBB. A standard assortment of features are also included.

10 Styled and 25 Structural Content Suffixes

Similar to Joomla there are 10 stylistic module class suffixes, these add a unique style variation to the modules: box1-6 and title1-4; and 25 structural suffixes, these affect the layout and metrics of the modules. You can apply variations using RokBB framework. Suffixes can be applied to the forum categories list, forum topics list, forum posts list and various modules. Extensive css styling gives user an ability to completly redesign the whole forum look and achieve even the most sophisticated results.

RokBridge Support

Community driven RokBridge is an attempt to bring back famous component into the newest Joomla 2.5/3.0 environment. RokBridge is a non-invasive, bi-directional bridge for Joomla and the forum platform phpBB. By following a few simple steps, you can easily integrate the two platforms, providing registration, user syncing and syncing of login sessions. Newest RokBridge comes with 3 default modules: login module, latest post module, member module. Please visit RokBridge forum for latest news and downloads.


Installation - RocketLauncher


Note: We always recommend installing a RocketLauncher first to trial and understand the style more efficiently. It contains sample content and initial configuration. It's ready for further customizations.
It must be installed as new, and not over an existing phpBB install.

Step 1 - Upload

  • Download the RocketLauncher (rt_metropolis_phpbb3-rocketlauncher.zip)
  • Unzip to reveal the rt_metropolis_phpbb3-rocketlauncher folder
  • Upload
You can upload all the files via FTP, or use cPanel or SSH to upload the zip and unzip directly onto the server. Enquire with your hosting provider.

Step 2 - Installation

Step 3 - Further Customization

  • Log in into phpBB Administration Control Panel
  • Navigate to Styles tab.
  • Scroll down to RocketTheme Styles category.
  • Select Metropolis or Global Configuration to customize your style.
Note: You may probably notice that we have changed default location for RokBB control panel. Now all modules are grouped into "RocketTheme Styles" under "Styles" tab.

Downloading the necessary files

  • RokBB administration module (rokbb.zip) This package contains the administration module which helps you configure the look and feel of your Metropolis style with ease.

Installing RokBB for the first time (fresh install)

Upload all the necessary files to your server. To be able to do that, you will need a ftp client or shell access. You can use also use server management software like cPanel. You may wish to ask your hosting provider if any of those exists. If yes, you can unzip your file directly onto the server. If you don't have shell access or any server management software installed, you need to unzip rokbb.zip on your hard drive and then do the upload. Here is the file list:

  • menunav.php upload to → phpBB root directory
  • rokbb.php upload to → phpBB root directory
  • adm/rokbb folder upload to → your_phpbb_root/adm/
  • adm/style/acp_rokbb.html upload to → your_phpbb_root/adm/style/
  • includes/rokbb upload upload to → your_phpbb_root/includes/
  • includes/acp/acp_rokbb.php upload to → your_phpbb_root/includes/acp/
  • includes/acp/info/acp_rokbb.php upload to → your_phpbb_root/includes/acp/info/
  • language/en/acp_rokbb.php upload to → your_phpbb_root/language/en/

Log into the phpBB Administration Control Panel. Change the following settings:

  • General → Server configuration → Load settings → Recompile stale style components to Yes
  • General → Server configuration → Security Settings → Allow php in templates to Yes

Purge the cache in General tab. After emptying cache complete following steps:

  • Go to the System tab → Module Management category → Administration Control Panel.
  • Select Styles in the Module management list.
  • At the bottom-left module creation field, type RocketTheme Styles then press the "Create new module" button.
  • Make sure Module enabled and Module Type - Category is selected.Press "Submit".
  • Click on the newly created "RocketTheme Styles" category.
  • Now we can add Metropolis and other templates for configuration. There is a dropdown list at the bottom right, where you can browse and select the module. Find Metropolis to add it for configuration.

  • Press "Add module"
  • Do the same with "Global Configuration".
  • After adding it. Press "Enable" to make the module active.
  • Now go to the "Styles" tab at the top. "RocketTheme Styles" category is third in a row. You can now select the Metropolis style and configure it's options.
Tip: You can add as many style modules as you want.

Don't be worried concerning the installation process as we only need this operation to be executed once. After that, to upgrade RokBB we will be only replacing files.



Updating RokBB (5.x)

You need only replace files with newer ones. Here is the list:

  • menunav.php upload to → phpBB root directory
  • rokbb.php upload to → phpBB root directory
  • adm/rokbb folder upload to → your_phpbb_root/adm/
  • adm/style/acp_rokbb.html upload to → your_phpbb_root/adm/style/

Warning: Metropolis style requires RokBB 5.x to work. Installing style without RokBB may cause problems accessing your forum.

Downloading the Style Files

  • Metropolis Style (rt_metropolis_phpbb3.zip) This file is the style package you will use to install Metropolis into phpBB.
  • Metropolis Source PNGs (rt_metropolis_phpbb3_sources.zip) This package contains the Adobe Fireworks source PNGs for making modifications and customizations to the images in the style. You will need Adobe Fireworks in order to fully utilize the Source PNG files.

Installing style

Installing Metropolis phpbb3 style is simpler - but similar to the RokBB installation requires server access. You can access your webserver by using FTP client , shell access or such solutions like cPanel and others.

  • Upload Metropolis (rt_metropolis_phpbb3.zip) to the server. Unzip it in folder "styles" (by using cpanel or shell access) located in your root phpbb3 installation directory.
  • If you don't have shell or cpanel, unzip rt_metropolis_phpbb3.zip on your hard drive and then do a ftp upload into styles folder. Remember to preserve folder structure. Directories like "metropolis" must be uploaded into the root "styles" folder.
  • Log in into the phpbb3 Administration Control Panel.
  • Select Styles tab.
  • Metropolis is at the bottom.
  • Install style and set as default.

How can i load default settings as seen on the demo ?
Settings are applied automatically. All you need to do is make sure you have latest RokBB5 Framework installed.
Where can i find all available Forum/Category/Module/Post variation suffixes ?
You can check Joomla Demo module variations page.
I don't see any demo images after phpBB style installation. Why ?
In order to avoid any copyright issues. Demo images are replaced with sample images.
When entering User Control Panel or Moderator Control Panel, the sidebar is gone. Why ?
In order to preserve maximum readability we decided to disable sidebar on certain subpages.User Control Panel contains many important parts so it's best to display it in wider view.You can disable that feature by editing overall_header.html in the HEAD section.
I have problems installing or displaying a style.Some images are missing... ?
You need to make sure that uploaded folders have correct permissions. Folders need to be set to 755.Files to 644.
Does Metropolis support splitmenu ?
No. In order to preserve maximum compatibility with RokNavMenu Exporter, Metropolis supports fusion menu only.
What is RokBB Administration Module and how set it up ?
RokBB is a separate RocketTheme administration component to configure the look and feel of the RocketTheme phpbb3 styles. Most of our styles have separate administration sections where you can set, for example: font-family, color variation, set menu options. All of those separate styles sections grouped into one module called RokBB, an innovative way to easily configure your RocketTheme phpbb3 style.
Do i have to enable any special options in phpbb3 administration panel ?
If you installed style and RokBB manually - Yes. RocketTheme are bundled with very advanced features. We require you to enable PHP in template files, and also we suggest you to enable style recompiling.After enabling both of those options remember to Purge the cache in General tab. My style looks ugly, images and styles are not loading. Please help.
First, make sure you have installed RokBB correctly.It is very important to copy all files into proper places. If you are sure that everything is ok you might want to completly clear the cache. Please follow instructions attached in this post.This should solve the issue with non-loading images and styles.
After installing style I'm getting bunch of errors about missing .html files. Did i make something wrong ?
This error is appears if don't have at least phpbb3 3.0.5 installed. Our style are using unique template inheritance implemented in 3.0.5.Sometimes this error appears even after upgrade to newest phpbb3 relase. You might wanna completly clear the cache. Instructions attached in this post.
I'm getting error about missing rokbb.php and my style is not loading.
Make sure you have installed RokBB correctly.
I'm running RocketTheme phpbb3 style in Joomla! Wrapper Component but it seems to be brokon and it slow downs my website.
We really do not recommend you to run our styles in Joomla! Wrapper. The best way is to use RokBridge and make some modifications in RokBB to fit your needs.
Can I install RocketLauncher on existing phpBB forum?
No. RocketLauncher will install both phpBB and the demo sample content and images, so you will need a fresh phpBB installation. More Details...
