Help require to make URL's search friendly. Just installed today

Hi this is my first post.  I'm hoping it's in the right place.  I've just installed joomla for the first time and love the catlyst style I used the full install so joomla was linked in with the template.  I've added some content but wanted to make the URL's search friendly.  We already have a website and wanted to use the same URL names to maintain rank and seo work that has been done already on the website. 

I found came across sh404SEF and have installed it but when its turned on the site does not show.

Any advice / help would be great welcome as I am currently pulling my hair out trying to figure out how to use Joomla for the first time and tweak this great template.

Also if anyone could recommend a plugin for Google Analytics that would be great to. I managed to put the js code in the index.php would this be the right way to go?

Also, for Google analytics, you can place the code right in the template's index.php file just above the closing body tag and you will be good to go:
