Anyone here using MAMP as a development platform?
« on: May 16, 2008, 02:56:48 PM »

Has anyone deployed MAMP in a production environment?

I know MAMP is supposed to be used as a development platform,, but it does seem stable and safe enough to deploy in a production environment?

Does anyone here have any opinion about this?

The one problem I've faced in using MAMP to host joomla is that it seems very difficult to install the updates to joomla. For instance updating from 1.5.2 to 1.5.3. How does one do it without having to open up every folder and replacing each file? There are thousands !

I know people who use mamp pro in production environments, although I don't use it myself.  Was thinking very hard about going with some xserves for my servers, but decided to 'rent' them so i didn't have to worry about replacing hardware etc.

Hey Andy,

Thanks for the reply.

What's the best way to update joomla in a MAMP environment? I have deployed MAMP Pro in a production environment for our company's Intranet because I'm not technical enough to set up an XSERVE to run Joomla.

Is setting up Joomla on an XSERVE as easy as turning on the services? How does one set up a MySQL database on the XSERVE? Do you still have to install phpMyAdmin and Zend Optimizer?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

I use MAMP with php 5.  I haven't tried an upgrade yet, but I haven't run into any major issues yet that I can recall.

mamp pro comes with mysql, php, apache, even zend optimizer (which is crap btw).  Your much better off using xcache as this works way better than zend.  Basically all the bits you need are there including phpmyadmin, this are just part of mamp.  You just drop your joomla install dir into the htdocs folder, and create a db and associated user, and then point your browser at the htdocs folder.  easy.. i cna install a full joomla in about 30 seconds start to finish.

Hey Andy, Why is zend crap? what is your reasoning for saying zend is crap? We have an in-house database that is being built from the ground up, the developer is asking us to purchase the Zend platform to speed up his app. We haven't bought it yet. It would be good for me to why zend is crap and ask him to use xcache instead.

zend optimizer by itself with no opcode cache will actually slow down your php code.  It's different if you employ it with the whole zend platform which costs quite a bit of money.  I think you'll find that if you search google for "php accelerators" two will rise to the surface, APC and XCache.  XCache was developed by the guys who write Lighttpd and it's proven to be more stable than APC for me.  RocketTheme is a pretty fast site right?  It's got a high-load but is very fast due to the XCache opcode caching we're employing.

The best advice is to get your code in a local environment and test it with various php accelerators.  All of them are free with the exception of Zend Platform, although zend optimizer is free.

Will the developer need to modify any of his code to employ XCache? He's using PostgreSQL.

nope, the php caches are totally independent of the code.

That's good to know. I'll ask him to try out XCache. Thanks!

Update: He's decided to go to ZEND Platform. But since ZEND PLATFORM is not supported on Leopard, he had to install SUSE Linux on the 8core. What a waste!

Do you know why ZEND PLATFORM isn't supported on Leopard? I thought, it would be a simple recompile or something because Leopard is certified UNIX.

Hey Andrew,

We're running MAMP on an iMac 24" for a dev platform and love it! It works great.. I'm not to privy on the cache portion of the issue, I would definitely defer to Andy here! But as for as MAMP, it's great. stable. easy to install and administer sites.. 30 sec install is very doable for a joomla site!

Enjoy
