Time to migrate--any clear instructions?
« on: July 18, 2008, 01:38:49 PM »

I have a Joomla 1.x site and I'm migrating to a 1.5 site with the new TerraTribune template.

I spent some time at the Joomla site but didn't see any clear instructions for migrating--very odd. Does anyone have a link they can point me to to get me going?

I want to move the data without touching the data on the old site--my guess is that I'd just restore a back-up into a new database and point the Joomla 1.5 install to it--but I'm not clear how to handle the fact that I have new sections, etc on the new site that won't match up. It is a video site so there are only 150 or so articles--could easily convert sections/categories by hand.

Pointers?

Yes, I've been looking at this stuff all day. Seems awfully complicated (and risky for someone like me who is just following the instructions blindly).

It seems that given the nature of my site (about 150 posts--I do original videos, etc) that it might make sense just to copy and paste the posts over by hand--slow but seems to have zero risk and shouldn't really take more than a couple hours (I've spent much more than that already just reading about migrating!). Any unforeseen risks in doing it this way?

Is there a way to transfer the users over by hand?

Always backup backup backup Smiley When doing a migration, do it all on a localhost and separate. Given the nature, it has to be separate from your 1.0 install anyway as you are installing on 1.5.

That migration process is what we do to convert the demos from 1.0 to 1.5
