Dedicated to James - Replicant 1.5
« on: June 23, 2008, 03:12:02 AM »

Hi all,

Firstly, my thanks to guys who answered my dumb newbie questions and in particular Roland Deschain.

The general joomla forum were helpful along with all component builders, too numerous to mention.

Over twelve months ago I lost my pride and joy, my one and only son.

I was determined to build a website dedicated to him he would have been proud of, hopefully this is good enough for him:

http://www.jamesszubinski.me.uk

More content is loaded weekly (I have lots of pictures)

Replicant was an amazing template, I had to switch it to legacy mode for some of the modules.
I borrowed the audio module from a Scottish developer,  - Du Vien or similar (he is vietnamese)
http://www.duvien.com/1-pixelout-audio-player-151-released-joomla-15x
The photo galleries were Phoca from Czeck Republic - http://www.phoca.cz/phocagallery/ thank you Jan - if you are browsing the photos use the RSS feeds and click on the little blue arrows. Also for an awsome experience goto Piclens and grab the browser plugin. Wow... a wall of photos, videos... whatever
The message component is brilliant - JoomlaComment - unfortunately the French developer has had to bow out and this is no longer supported - great shame.... maybe someone here can take it over

Finally the very customizable and visual counter.... excellent... from the guys at Neoworx

not forgetting the excellent module to move (clone) my site onto the target with doing the minimal amount of effort - JoomlaPlug

Ok that is everything I think.....

Comments anyone?

thanks

Hi George,

Firstly, sorry to hear about your Son. I think this is a very admirable thing you have done in designing a site dedicated to him. It is something I will need to do if I outlive my parents and other close relations. I chose the Replicant template when I began using Rockettheme last year. Until the Chromotore Template came out it was always my favourite. The audio is a nice touch. You may want to think about widening your wrapper? Otherwise, nice site.

Martin

Thanks for your kind comments.

Your last point... you may want to think about widening your wrapper?Huh

Being a bit dense I know, but (a) why would I do that? (b) what is a wrapper? (c) how do I do that??

thanks

The wrapper determines how wide you want your site.
There are Two things on your site that tell me you need to widen your wrapper.
1) The last link on the Horizontal Menu is on a second line because there is not enough space in the wrapper.
2) You have an overflow of data on the right hand side again because there is not enough space in the wrapper.

I don't think you can adjust the wrapper in the Admin Console so instead you will need to open up "template_css.css" in your templates folder of Joomla!. I use Dreamweaver but any HTML editor will do. Once opened, you will see a list of parameters. These tell the web browsers, IE, Firefox, Opera how to read your website. You need to search for "wrapper". Then change the width as you need it.

Brilliant, thanks for that information.

You don't know what you don't know....

When the horizontal menu wrapped, I thought, don't like that but maybe it should look like that...

thanks

Big shame... I found the wrapper code <but> the template is heavily rel;iant on the transparent images and a whole bunch of them needs resizing too....

see http://www.rockettheme.com/option,com_smf/Itemid,190/topic,14759.0/ one of the posters suggested labs could rework the template to be fluid, but that is non-trivial as far as I can see ...

ah well..

Gees, sorry about that! I remember now having that problem. I decided to dump it and use my own style. You can download the template I used from *** LINK REMOVED ***. It is Joomla! 1.0 so you cant use it on your 1.5 site but you may be able to learn something from it if you look at the images. My apologies to have pointed you in the wrong direction.

Thanks Martin but I have very little capacity at the moment...

I'm busy looking at some of the nice features in Hyperion and planning a site for my family... boring I know but an interesting exercise.

I enjoyed seeing the site about your beautiful son.  He shares a birthday with my oldest son--Feb 20.   My eyes are filling with tears as I imagine losing a treasure of a son like that.  Your tribute to him is beautiful.  What a handsome fellow and obviously well-loved by all.

In Firefox it does seem like there is something odd about where the main content is landing relative to the menu--the menu is centered but the content is veering to the right, sort of.  I think I would want it all centered, but I have no idea what to suggest.

God bless your family.

Kathy

Thank you for your kind words. Folk say it gets easier - those who have shared the same loss know its not true.

You are absolutely right that the content is not quite right. It appears to flow over the right even though it is left justified. on the frontpage I used a read more and in the read more I think I used a table to insert the text to try to get the appearance better. But didnt bother anywhere else because I was in a hurry to load the site content (still lots of pics to load).

Martin makes reference to it in the wrapper section above. Had I made the wrapper bigger I would get a better alignment. Although that is true about the menu, I need to revisit the text alignment because that can be fixed. If anyone could give me some best practise tips on content alignment - or urls - that would be great.

thanks
