iBook G3 - any suggested applications, info for a new Mac user?
« on: June 03, 2008, 12:35:11 AM »

No, I didn't get a Mac, yet. Cheesy But my Mom bought an iBook (not sure if that is the correct name - it's a laptop) G3 from Ebay and I am just wondering if ya'll have any suggestions that I can pass along to her. She is an artist and a musician (piano) and has been using Windows since she first got a computer some 10 years ago.

Any suggestions are welcome, I'll learn something new too!

Cheers

Hey Andy, she told me over the phone that it is running Leopard, but I cannot confirm that as I have not seen it in person yet.

This is kind of a test, if Mom likes the Mac her next machine will be a new Mac. Wink

If it's an iBook G3, it won't be able to run Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard as this version requires a min. G4 8xx Mhz cpu.

It should be ok running Tiger if you have enough memory, at least 1GB, but in my opinion the best alternative would be Mac OS X 10.3 Panther.

It all depends on what your mother will be using the Mac for (iBook is a Mac). It will be ok running webbrowsers (not sure if Safari is compatible with Panther, but it works great on Tiger), text, mail and anything that won't require heavy use of the cpu.

I recon the iBook is one of the white models and not the toiletBook/Clamshell (1. iBook, the one that looked llike a toiletseat), and it should be able to handle most of her needs.

PS: The battery might need to be changed if the last owner haven't done this during the last year.

the most a g3 ibook can run is 640MB of RAM i bought an ibook g3 for my girlfriend for like $150 then upgraded the RAM cost $30.

Office 2004 runs ok aswell as itunes. It wont play films though like youtube or even avis etc. Some older version of cubase will run on it fine but you'd be looking at cubase 1 or 2 hard to find! they are nice for general office and surfing though and to get started on mac!
