iPhones and webpage pixel width
« on: July 15, 2008, 07:49:53 PM »

Would love to hear other's opinions on this, especially the RT design team.

Although the pixel width of an iPhone screen is 320 pixels (held vertically) or 480 pixels (held horizontally) according to Apple the default "viewport" setting for the iPhone is 980 pixels when using its Safari browser.

http://developer.apple.com/webapps/designingcontent.php

"To make this work on iPhone, the viewport has a scale, width, and height property. When Safari first loads a webpage, it sets the initial scale to fit the webpage completely width-wise on the iPhone screen. Safari on iPhone also sets the viewport width to 980 pixels, the width of most webpages. If these default values don't work for your content, you can change them and other viewport properties using the viewport meta tag in your content."

So although your code can specify different viewport properties, Apple's iPhone Safari by default assumes 980 pixels.

So do you think that websites should not exceed 980 pixels in width if iPhone users will be, or already are, a part of your audience? Seems like iPhone surfers will soon become a bigger factor.

Just curious. Smiley
