Yes, don't edit the root index.php!
You need to edit the
template's
index.php file...should be in templates/rt_vortex/.

Thank you, Dan!
I found the template's index.php file. Adobe GoLive CS2 is my default program for opening the file, however, when I do open it a dialogue box pops up saying:
~~~~~~~~~~~
The page has no encoding information.
[1st radio button] Would you like to open the page using the selected encoding? The page will not be modified.
or
[2nd radio button] Would you like to set the page to the selected encoding? Only the Meta-Information is changed, the page is not reencoded.
(Then below that option it provides a pulldown menu for multilingual, western, or Japanese encoding.)
~~~~~~~~~~~
Q1: Is GoLive as good as any? If not, could you nominate another option or two (that I might, perhaps/hopefully already own)?
Q2: If GoLive is alright, which option should I select. Experimenting neither seems to give me the script I saw on the tutorial (for changing colors, etc.).
Thank you!

Kylan,
In backend, go to your templates, select
rt_vortex
and click on the button
Edit HTML
. Now you can modify it directly.

In GoLive, leave the encoding as it is, if it changes the file then it will likely not work properly.
I either edit directly (as per Yves' suggestion) or, for more complex changes, use Dreamweaver.
There are also plenty of free editors out there.

For a set up like on the demo server, you will need to download and install the Rocketlauncher package which is a full Joomla install, the template and all the bells and whistles just like the demo.
Hope this helps

Thank you, Yves! My highest compliments on your photography. Wow.
So is there any difference in these two things?
1. editing HTML from the backend
2. editing the template's index file through FTP
Sincere thanks!

1. editing HTML from the backend
2. editing the template's index file through FTP
The only difference is the editor. Directly in the backend would be like editing in Notepad It will probably make you go cross-eyed after a while
I normally use the backend editor, copy & paste in Dreamweaver, make edits, then copy & paste back.

You will have to use Fireworks to use the source files to their maximum extent.
