Joomla 1.5
« on: April 09, 2006, 02:46:22 AM »

Hi,

I was just wondering, whether the existing templates will be compatible with Joomla 1.5 once it is released. You are probably not able to answer this right now, since this is not final yet. But it will be nice to know at some point.

Best,
Michael

Yippee! All RT templates!!

Will there be a way to upgrade Joomla 1.0.x to 1.5? Hope so! I know this is a Joomla.org question, but I wanted to get the skinny from the horses mouth. What say, Andy?

Re: Joomla 1.5 - Template Parameters?
« Reply #6 on: June 16, 2006, 12:37:48 AM »

Andy, I'm pretty stoked about the Template Parameters in 1.5.

QUESTIONS:

1. Are you planning to take advantage of this feature on the templates released after Joomla 1.5 is released?

2. What kind of Template Perameters are you envisioning for the new templates?

3. Will the 'older' templates, already released, be re-worked to include Template Perameters? If so, what are you thinking about including?

I'm looking forward to reading about 1.5 in Part 3!

1) yes i plan on taking advantage of these features

2) anything i use in a templateConfig.inc.php file or at th etop of index.php to configure options, would be a template param going forward.  I just need to ensure I keep a 1.0 backwards compatible method available for folks who do not upgrade.

3) I probalby will not go back and rework existing templates.

I will ensure they all are compatible.

Andy - I *love* the May 6 "Fire" templates; very nice.

When I install on my beta v 1.5 website, it gets there errors:

Code:
Warning: mosshowlistmenu(/templates/rt_fire/js/ie.js): failed to open stream: No such file or directory in D:\webApache\Apache2\sites\alpha\templates\rt_fire\rt_supersucker.php on line 85

Warning: mosshowlistmenu(): Failed opening '/templates/rt_fire/js/ie.js' for inclusion (include_path='.;c:\php4\pear') in D:\webApache\Apache2\sites\alpha\templates\rt_fire\rt_supersucker.php on line 85

Now, I am using a Windows Server and am unable to get FTP support to work. It might be related to that problem. Or, is the template install process not far enough along, yet, on v. 1.5 to even attemp this, yet?

I ask only because I was planning a demo for people considering Joomla! at work and wanted a nice looking template. But, if I am too far ahead of the curve, no problem, the template that comes with Joomla! v 1.5 is pretty hot, too!

Thanks, Andy!
Amy

PS - Where is the spell check? I cannot be expected to spell!  Wink

hmm.. what is the url of your joomla 1.5 install?  seems the menu code i'm using is not getting the full URL and the path to the file is based on your site being at the root of your domain, which it probalby isn't.

Hi Andy,

I am looking forward to Part 3 of your blog!
Lucid and clear writing. Kudos

However my original question was referring to David's question
if there was any upgrade path from Joomla 1.0.x to 1.5
You answered: "well, we dont have a good answer to that yet i'm afraid."

I wanted to know if there is an answer to that question already.
I have been reading the article in PHP magazine written by Mitch Pirtle
and also there is not anything to be found about upgrade possibilities.

So again how is the state of affairs in this respect?
or are you perhaps saving the upgrade path news for Part 3 of your blog?

Thanks in advance!

It's still not realy resolved.  We plan on having an upgrade path, just how that will work we've not finalised.  It might be included in the installer, or it might be a seperate script.  it might get you 90% there, it might do a 100%, we're just not sure until 1.5 is pretty close to being ready.

Well, Andy, we just have to sit tight and wait, isn't it.
I asked it because I was thinking about what I should do.

Because of my work and pressing family matters,
I can really only spend about one hour per day in researching
and trying to build my website(s).
I do sometimes more, but that takes it toll.

I was wondering if it would be better for me
to wait for 1.5 and then continue with development.
otherwise I might be doing things that have to be changed later-on

You can only be more definite about things: "until 1.5. is pretty close to being ready"
How close is it? When dou you more or less expect/hope that there is
a workable (stable) version, so that people like me can go ahead.

Of course it is fine that great strides have been taken
in development of Joomla! and I won't give up on it,
but for the moment everything seems in such a state of flux
that I really don't know what to do. Go ahead or just wait.

Then there were the updates, 1.0.9. and shortly after that
1.0.10. Update, update it is shouted at us.
That's great for all the pros but a nuisance for me.

Could you, please sketch out any sort of time frame
that you expect, more or less, that 1.5 could/will be ready?
Is it weeks or is it months?
I know this is a dificult question.
I won't hold it against you if later
it proves to be longer!  Grin
Other people should do likewise, of course.

Thanks in advance again!

@HansNL - since you don't have much time every day to work with web stuff, you probably have not downloaded the alpha v. 1.5, yet. I try to do so every week, or so, and I will tell you, IMO, they are clearing a wide path for Beta soon.

Plus, Mitch said on the Skype broadcast --> he wants to meet the August San Francisco convention with a released v. 1.5 product. So, if you know Mitch, he gets what he wants or heads roll! < just kidding. >

No one can promise us anything -- the future in any sense is impossible to determine. What you don't see between alpha versions anymore are new directions -- you just see things starting to get nailed down -- and, to me, that is a promising sign towards release.

++++

OK. I am here, though, to see if Andy was able to modify the Fire template to "live" at a subdirectory of the domain name. I guess I will test it -- and then return to this post and ask if it doesn't work. BRB ;-) < Andy - where is that spellchecker? >
