Somaxiom June 2010 Joomla Template

SomaxiomSomaxiom, the June 2010 Template Club release, concentrates on elegance of design and styled third party extension support. The visuals are refined and conservative, making the appearance suitable for many different types of sites, as well as providing a base for extensive customization.

The template sports the latest version of the Gantry Framework, which provides such features as native iPhone Support, Google Web Fonts, and Smart Loading, amongst others.

NOTICE: Somaxiom is a Joomla 1.5 and Joomla 1.7 template.

NOTICE: Somaxiom has limited support for IE6. The primary restrictions are placed on the preset settings (only low is available), the menu (fusion menu is replaced with suckerfish) and RTL support is not present.

Third Party Extensions Support

Somaxiom has styling for 3 major third party extensions: JomSocial, K2 and JComments; as well as styled support for RokQuickCart. The extensions will not be included in the RocketLauncher package, but can be download / purchased from the developers of each extension, and installed. Remember to activate Third Party Styling in Admin → Extensions → Template Manager → rt_somaxiom_j15 → Advanced

  • JomSocial: A commercial 3rd party social networking component by Azrul, which is used to power the new Joomla Community itself.
  • K2: is a powerful content expansion extension by JoomlaWorks, vastly extending Joomla's content capacity to truly take control over how content is displayed on your site.
  • JComments: is a simple and free commenting component by JoomlaTune, adding commenting facilities to any content page in your site, with extensive configuration options.

Gantry Framework

Somaxiom is the built with the Gantry Framework, which includes powerful features such as menu item control, RTL support, custom presets and many more. This is all on top of the first generation features, making Gantry the most noticeable, and far reaching feature of the template.

Gantry is, as a basic definition, A framework used for assembling, building and maintaining a RocketTheme template. It is an advanced platform for dramatically extending the capabilities of the entire theming system of Joomla.

Version 3.0 Features

Somaxiom is the first template to be driven by Gantry v3.0. There are several major features in this Gantry release, ranging from iPhone support, to Google Web Fonts, to Smart Loading, several bug fixes and much more.

iPhone Platform Theme

This version of Gantry expands its browser portfolio to iPhone's Safari, producing a mobile version of the Somaxiom template for all visitors using the popular smartphone.

  • Theme: iPhone specific theme, combining pre-existing template elements with mobile specific styling
  • Aliases: Assign current module positions to mobile equivalents such as mobile-header → header-a

NOTICE: The latest version of RokNavMenu is required for the Somaxiom Menu to work.

RTL Support

Template side RTL support from the Fusion menu to the Typography. This is in conjunction with Gantry's RTL support for the automatic flipping of the grid system.

If Joomla is set to RTL mode, in its language settings, the Somaxiom template will automatically adjust to its RTL layout. The modules will invert inside a row, such as showcase-a and showcase-f being in alternate locations; the various template elements such as the breadcrumbs and typography will also flip; and also the menu will adjust accordingly (ensure you are using the latest version of RokNavMenu however).

Installation - Joomla 1.5


Downloading the Template Files

To install the template, you need one of the following files:-

  • Somaxiom Template (Standalone) rt_somaxiom_j15.tgz - This is the standalone template file that you use to install into Joomla.
  • Somaxiom Template (Bundle) rt_somaxiom_j15-bundle.tar.gz - This is the bundle package, containing the template and Gantry library files, that you use to install into Joomla.
  • RokNavMenu rt_somaxiom_j15-extensions.zip or mod_roknavmenu.zip - This is required for the menu to work, either download from the extensions package in the Somaxiom download section or from the RokNavMenu download area itself.
Only use the Bundle package on a clean install, or on an install that does NOT have the Gantry library already installed - /components/com_gantry. Use the standalone package if the Gantry library is already present.

There are other files that you may wish to download that accompany the release, but are not required for the template to work.

  • Somaxiom Source PNG(s) rt_somaxiom_j15-sources.zip - This contains all the Adobe Fireworks PNG source files for the template, and if applicable, the logo font.
  • Somaxiom Extensions rt_somaxiom_j15-extensions.zip - This package contains all the extensions that accompany the template release.
  • Somaxiom RocketLauncher rt_somaxiom_j15-rocketlauncher.zip - The RocketLauncher pack is a full Joomla install that contains all the demo content, including extensions and the template.

Using the Joomla Installer

From the Menu in your Joomla Administrator, go to Extensions → Install/Uninstall.

Next, browse for the rt_somaxiom_j15.tgz or rt_somaxiom_j15-bundle.tar.gz file that you downloaded earlier and then click Upload File & Install.

Making Somaxiom the Default

installationNext, go to Extensions → Template Manager. Find rt_somaxiom_j15 on the list of installed templates.

Select the radio button to the left and then click Default up in the top right corner. Somaxiom is now your default template.

Additionally, you can also edit the template's customization parameters by selecting this same radio button and clicking the "Edit" button in the top right corner.
