UPGRADE TO LATEST VERSION OF JOOMLA! USING MAMP/MAC

Per popular request, for fellow mac lovers like us.
i've looked around and couldn't find a clear cut answer on how to upgrade to the latest version of joomla! on my local host MAMP /mac.
I saw something about using Terminal but no clear instructions for how to do this in a local host environment.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thx.

Pretty simple, download the latest version and replace the current files after doing a backup, of course.

Its very easy via terminal, I'd recommend it over anything else.

1. Download the relevant patch(es) from JoomlaCodes

2. Unzip them locally

3. Open Terminal

4. Type cd and ensure there is a space after the cd

5. Drag the unzipped patch folder onto terminal and the path should now appear next to cd such as cd /Users/name/Desktop/name-of-patch

6. Now type cp -R * and remember the space after the asterisk *. Also note that there is a space between p and -R and another space between -R and *

7. Now drag the directory you which to patch into terminal and it should now read something like cp -R * /Applications/MAMP/htdocs/joomla/Joomla_RT_Refraction_j15/

8. Hit enter and voilà it should patch. This is the merge command BTW.

Believe it or not, I update using Windows, it has the merge built right in the OS. I'm sure you can find a bizillion Mac and PC utilities to do this, but for me, it's the easiest way. You could do it with Windows and Macdrive, either with boot camp or VM. It's the one of three reasons I run Windows. The other two are games and mapping software. For everything else (and actual work) my Mac rules!

merge built into windows? are you sure about that? What did you do to merge exactly?

Hi Andy, thanks for the great site and designs, I can't wait to try some of the new themes.

I was just referring to how Windows lets you drop a folder with sub folders right on another one and it asks you if you want to overwrite the older files with the newer ones (if they have the same name, a sort of merging takes place or the kind I need at least). On a Mac, this action would replace everything including sub folders and customized files which may in fact be newer.

But you must know this already, so maybe I'm not understanding the question?

Ah.. ok, I thought you meant merging at the file level, ie differences within files. Actually you can do that windows style folder copy in OS X also, you just have to do it from the terminal:

  1.
  2. cp -R /sourcefolder /destinationfolder
  3.

This is a unix style copy and it does exactly what your talking about

Just doesn't have that UI portion in Finder, wish they would do that though! :)

A little late to this thread, but I use the Sync-feature of Transmit. (locally and on the server).
Here is how to set up ftp locally with Mamp:
