RocketTheme focusing on Joomla! 1.5 in 2009

Latest Templates and Information from RocketTheme
As you are all well aware, Joomla! 1.5 was released in January of 2008.  Since the launch, Joomla! 1.5 has quickly become the defacto standard for new installs and we've observed the gradual decline in downloads of the 1.0 versions compared to the 1.5 versions.  The advanced template parameters, custom chrome, and html overrides provide us the possibility to create even better templates with even better features, however, we are currently limited due to our support of Joomla! 1.0 which has none of these great additions.  Also, we are often constrained with our modules and value-add extensions due to inherent limitations in the 1.0 framework.

We want to continue to best serve our members and provide you with the best possible designs and continue to push the envelope, but to make this happen we need to move on from 1.0 and focus on 1.5 only development.  We understand that there are still many sites that are built on 1.0 and we don't plan any immediate action.  We are proposing a date of January 2009 for this change as that will mark the 1 year anniversary of the 1.5 release.

NOTE: We will not end support of our existing Joomla! 1.0 templates, rather we will not be creating Joomla 1.0 templates and extensions from January 2009 onwards.

We're interested to hear your thoughts and ideas on this.

Cheers,
Andy Miller

I think it's very generous of you to wait until 2009 to stop making 1.0 templates.  One of the other template clubs has already stopped!

Thanks, Andy.

How about a poll on the subject?
If it means more functionality, more time for phpbb3 templates with the up and coming Rokbridge and more tightly integrated Joomla 1.5 modules I would say drop 1.0 templates now. :)

If i put up a poll, undoubtedly the most popular result would be to continue with both until the end of time :)

A Nifty Idea Andy!

No really, just kidding.      I understand the need to isolate your focus on the newer platform.

Do it and don't look back.........

Drop it now. The sooner the better. If you're a web designer and still putting your clients on 1.0, then you're doing wrong by them. I'd be pretty miffed if I paid someone to install a website for me only to find out the software they used was near end of life.

I feel sorry for the template clubs and anyone who makes a Joomla component or module. They basically had to almost double the workload, almost double the effort, release multiple versions that weren't interchangeable and support them all. Basically double time and effort without a price increase.

The sooner everyone starts moving on to 1.5 the better. Hanging on to legacy software is just a bad decision.

I reckon keep developing 1.0.x templates until any one of the following is arrived at:

a.) Your stats indicate 1.0.x downloads make up less then 25% of template downloads for the month. (This is better then a poll)
b.) Either sobi2 or mosets tree is 1.5 native AND Fireboard is 1.5 native AND CB is 1.5 native AND Seyret is 1.5 native AND Mosets HP is 1.5 native.
c.) The 1st of Jan, 2009 arrives.

Well said, hoping that before January 2009 all the most important extensions will be native.

Speaking of which, does anyone have a time frame on when these will be become 1.5 - might be an idea to post that in the 1.5 discussions board if anyone knows.

CB 1.2RC (J1.5 native)has been released to supporters so maybe one to three months for a stable(FOC to the public)
Seyret - 1 - 3 months
Mosets tree - 1-3 months
Mosets HP - no idea
Sobi2 - no idea
FB - no idea

I am absolutely certain every single one of them will be available for J1.5 by years end. If any aren't, I will consider them dead ends.

Another factor to consider is that J1.6 will be out by then. (August?September?October?) I haven't followed the latest discussions on this matter, but the last I heard from the core team was that Joomla would be backwards compatible by only one version. ie. J1.6 will run 1.5 extensions in legacy mode, but will not run 1.0.x extensions.
