Top 10

Postby James S! on Thu May 29, 2008 2:10 pm

Wondering what everyones' top 10 apps for the Mac where and why? Here are mine below:- (excluding default OSX apps)

1. Quicksilver: http://blacktree.com/?quicksilver - excellent plugin that I use as an App Launcher.

2. Growl: http://growl.info/ - another excellent plugin that is used for notification for almost all apps, whether that be Firefox, Mail, Skype or Transmit.

3. TextMate: http://macromates.com/ - powerful coding tool, the app of dreams for any coder :)

4. CSSedit: http://macrabbit.com/cssedit/ - another powerful coding tool but focuses solely on CSS

5. Firefox 3: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-rc.html - not Mac specific but my favourite browser of all time, especially the new Firefox 3 with its Mac specific features. Also, don't forget Firebug people!

6. Zoom: http://coderage-software.com/zooom/ - a plugin that enhances the window controlling features such as moving, resizing, optimising and more. For example, Alt + shft with mouse drag resizes any window no matter where you place your icon. Cmd + shft has similar effect but is for moving.

7. Savvy Clipboard: http://www.blitzclicksoft.com/products.php - an app that enhances the clipboard so you have more than 1 item in the clipboard memory, extremely handy.

8. Linkinus: http://linkinus.com/ - awesome IRC client with a beautiful interface

9. NetNewsWire: http://www.newsgator.com/Individuals/NetNewsWire/ - free and awesome RSS reader

10. Betterzip: http://betterzip.com/ - incredible app for archiving

Wow! why do you need so many different programs for ftping?  :)

Transmit lets you transfer remotely doesn't it?

They all offer something different and I can't decide which one I like to use the most :)

Cyberduck is just a great, little client thats create for light FTPing. Transmit is a bit more robust than Cyberduck and would use that for more extensive FTPing.

ExpanDrive is just cool, it mounts your server and you can browser it using finder as if it was part of your harddrive, quicklook and all.

Filezilla -  for ftp, beats them all hands down - Opensource too :)

ExpanDrive -  seems similar to webdrive I used years ago.

Sumultron -  for decent opensource text editing.

iarchiver -  http://iarchiver.com/index.html even extracts 7zip files in OSX though it's not as powerful as the PC freeware archive monster.

Thunderbird -  A fab mail client

vlc media player - Play most media without reliance on OS codec management.

Senuti - Itunes backwards means less bull getting music on and off an ipod.

Microsoft Remote desktop, NOmachine NMX and chicken of the VNC for remote desktop computing.  The built in screensharing in Leopard is an extremely poor implementation of VNC so use one of these alternatives.

I thought it was junk in tiger, but with the adaptive compression, and the resizing, it's great in leopard.  way faster than chicken or jolly or any other vnc client for me at least.

1 - Quick Silver - Awesome.
2 - 1Password - Just soo slick and works like a million times better than any Windows equivalent.
3 - Forklift - Awesome FTP program and WAY faster compared to CyberDuck and Transmit - did a couple of quick tests today and I have no idea why anyone would use Transmit over Forklift? - http://iandmac.com/2008/06/duck-truck-o ... -ftp-test/
4 - Skitch - Awesome
5 - JobTimer, great for all my hourly billed client work
6 - Safari - Best browser imo
7 - Aperture - Awesome
8 - Ecto - I just love writing blog entries locally, and would LOVE if something would be invented for Joomla (Andy?).
9 - NetNewsWire - Stressing with all those unread messages but besides that awesome feed reader.
10 - I love CandyBar as well, just wish something like Shapeshifter would soon arrive to Leopard :(
