I've just updated to 1.0.7 that was painless.
I've never updated before and nowhere on the Joomla! site do they say "to update just over write the existing files with these ones"
Thank goodness for test sites
I think the Joomla! people think that everyone has had experience with Mambo before so automagically know what to do to upgrade etc. Hopefully they will have some documentation up soon.
Other than that it's all good
