What does 'Update Sites' do in the latest joomla 3.4?

In Joomla 3.4, there is a new feature called "Update Sites" located in "extension manager", anyone knows what this is about?
Besides, I notice this feature when I try to upgrade my k2 from 2.6.7 to 2.6.9. Strangely, there isn't any 'upgradable' message in the control panel, although my k2 version is not up to date. Does this have anything to do with this "update sites" feature?

It's a list of the sites where joomla will look for your updates to your installed plugins/extensions. You should enable all of these to ensure that when you press the "find updates" it will find all the latest versions from all of those sites.
