stolen code

    • i hope this is ok to post here.

another site has stolen some of my code, and included in this is some css from rocket theme. so, i am going to the rocket-theme community to ask how to deal with it. it stands to reason that since they used rockettheme stuff, they are also stealing from rocket theme.

i know that people steal code all the time, but my favicon is right beside his website name in the url! our name appears on his page, and his code is riddled with calls to our site. they are using some of our images that are branded, they are using some of the javascript off of our site including some joomla standards like jom_comment.

how do i best get them to stop? i don't want to reveal their site yet until i talk to our lawyer -- we are in some advertising negotiations and this other site could have a negative impact on this. i could work with someone from rocket theme off forum if they want to contact me off forum re whether rocket theme property has been stolen/violated.

my biggest question is could they be compromising our site?

i did a whois, and contacted godaddy where they are regisetered, but its a hidden registration. i will email fraud dept at godaddy.
the guy has an email link on his page to an aol account. should i talk to him directly and offer to build his website for him after i ask him to cease and desist?

what is weird is how i found out -- they copied our google analytics code. i know that this is not supposed to be able to happen, but it did. they showed up in our google analytics today.

      any thoughts?

    • the better side of me suggests you get your lawyer to send him a strongly worded and scary cease and desist notice.

the other part of me says since he is using some images directly off your site, find out which ones, and replace them with porn and images saying "this design was stolen from [yoursite.com]" 8)

either way, you're lucky he's in the states. anywhere else and it would be almost impossible to deal with.

    • I have been in a similar situation and found that a simple cease and desist letter (with the threat of legal action and fines) is enough for them to quickly remove the offending material.

You can actually find some good free ones off the net and just edit it and forward it on that way you save a bit in legal fees - Unless you have to pursue the matter further.

I do however love Gollum's Idea.

    • i had a problem with a site linking to my images/css etc, i blocked them in .htaccess:
      # image stealers
      RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} ^http://(.+\.)?somesite\.com/ [NC]
      RewriteRule .*\.(jpe?g|gif|bmp|png|css|html|js)$ - [F]

    • I am curious how they got the code.

Just a page source cut and paste?

Weird that they even got your google analytics code in.

      Nice idea Andy.

      I like GollumX's second idea too! ;)

      Cheers!

    • In regards to stealing picture bandwidth...the best one I had ever seen - was the guy fixed up some gay images with contact info to the site that was stealing the images - then replaced them. He went to town and basically gave the site a whole new look. Needless to say - things happened really fast and quietly. :P

and this www.httrack.com/ can also make a 99% similar copy of your site, but just in html format, and no .php file in it anymore
